The surrounding area provides a wealth of interest for visitors in terms of flora, fauna, scenery and historic activity.

The bird life in the district is extensive and remarkable, and Venables " Birds and Mammals of Shetland " can be studied at close range, the best time being May and early summer , although a large number of migratory birds can be seen in the fall of the year.

No visit to Shetland would be complete without visiting St Ninian's Isle, where Christianity was first brought to the Islands. St Ninian's is joined to the mainland by the finest example of a sand tombolo in Europe. On the Isle are the remains of a monastery where in 1958 a schoolboy discovered silver treasure the designs of which are incorporated into many items of Shetland jewellery. The originals are now in Edinburgh but copies can be seen in Lerwick museum, which is well worth a visit for its fascinating exhibitions.

Whilst near to St Ninian's a visit to Bigton Art and Craft centre is worth while, a warm welcome will be given whilst you browse a mongst the paintings and artefacts .

For a glimpse of early Shetland life and traditions, visits the Boddam Croft House Museum and Quendale Mill. Understand how our Pictish ancestors lived by visiting Jarlshof at Sumburgh which is 4000 years old, relatively new is the archaeological dig at Scatness at 2000 years old. Whilst at Sumburgh visit the lighthouse in June and July you may see whales and many puffins.

We are sure that you will enjoy your stay at Spiggie and share with us the pleasure of living in this special part of Britain.
